About This Project
This website was created to act as a community hub for the revival of Lahaina’s 150-year-old Banyan Tree. It is a space to follow along on her growth and progress as well as share community stories, memories, and updates. The Lahaina Banyan Tree is a symbol of hope, and her roots a collection of Lahaina and Maui’s rich history.

The Lahaina Banyan Tree, located in Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii, is a remarkable and iconic natural landmark with a rich history. Planted in 1873 by the local sheriff William Owen Smith to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first American Protestant mission in Lahaina, the banyan tree is a prominent symbol of historical and cultural significance.
While banyan trees are native to India, the Lahaina Banyan Tree (Ficus benghalensis) is unique due to its exceptional size and the way it has grown. The tree was imported from India as a gift and planted as an 8-foot sapling, but over time, its aerial roots dropped to the ground and developed into additional trunks, resulting in a sprawling canopy that now covers an entire city block.
